#CoverTheAthlete

Following #TwirlGate at this year’s Australian Open where Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard was asked to give the crowd (and world) a twirl in her outfit during a post-match interview #CoverTheAthlete is working to eradicate sexist sport commentary. The campaign features a video which has adapted actual statements to female athletes and invites us to tweet media outlets asking them to #CoverTheAthlete.

Statement from #CoverTheAthlete below and do be sure to watch the video.

Something’s wrong with media coverage of female athletes.

Sexist commentary, inappropriate interview questions, and articles commenting on physical appearance not only trivializes a woman’s accomplishments, but also sends a message that a woman’s value is based on her looks, not her ability. And it’s much too commonplace.

It’s time to demand media coverage that focuses on the athlete and her performance, not her hair, clothes or body.

Ask the media to #CoverTheAthlete
