Petra Collins in her response to being censored by Instagram after publishing a photograph of her unkempt bikini line astutely notes how body hair is always absent from adverts for hair removal products. So obvious and yet so unnoticed (at least by my eyes). I have thus become hyper sensitive to this absence and was rewarded for this obsession recently when I saw the following advert for the Veet ‘Natural Inspirations’ line where in place of hair a cactus and thorny rose stem have been superimposed onto the actress’ legs. After application though these thorns disappear and the sheer, fractured image of the female body we are presented with is instead adorned with a smooth stem which I think we can very much (and very troublingly) read metonymically…
